E.L. Craig began his own roofing business at the age of 69 in an old streetcar barn in Joplin, Missouri in 1944. His wife named the company "TAMKO" using the first letters of their five target market statesTexas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The streetcar barn, a long and narrow structure, was ideally suited to house a roofing production line. It also served as TAMKO's first headquarters. Despite material and supply shortages created by World War II, Mr. Craig had TAMKO up and running before the year was over. TAMKO supported the war effort in 1945. TAMKO Roofing Products, Inc. has grown beyond its original building and territory to become a leading national manufacturer of residential and commercial roofing products, waterproofing, cements and coatings. It is still family-owned, still has high work ethics, and continues to deliver products with the high standards.
Owens Corning, the company that invented glass fiber, boasts a fascinating history of innovation and entrepreneurship. This legacy has continued as the company grew into the world leader in advanced glass and building material systems, and expands globally through today's competitive, international markets. Both Owens-Illinois Glass Company and Corning Glass Company had been experimenting with glass fiber technology. In 1932, a young researcher was attempting to weld together architectural glass blocks to form a vacuum-tight seal. A jet of compressed air accidentally struck a stream of molten glass. This resulted in fine glass fibers. They immediately began conducting experiments substituting glass fibers for natural or other synthetic fibers in textile applications. The glass-fiber textile industry is still going strong. In addition to many other products Owens Corning makes one of the very best brands of residential siding. |
